Airtime
Actual time spent using the satellite network. Airtime usage can be billed by minutes (Voice, Streaming IP), MB (Standard IP) or messages (SMS).
BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network)
Global mobile communications service provided by Inmarsat. Delivers simultaneous voice and broadband data communications via a lightweight, notebook-size device. Provides seamless network coverage across most of the world's landmass and offers Standard IP at speeds up to 492kbps and "on-demand" Streaming IP at up to 384kbps.
Encryption
The process of encoding a message such as a satellite terminal transmission to prevent it from being read by unauthorized parties.
FleetBroadband
The first truly global maritime communications service offering simultaneous broadband data and voice via a compact antenna. FleetBroadband provides a cost-effective, fast, reliable and easy-to-use “always-available” solution for mail, Internet, corporate network and voice services. Based on the BGAN network using 3G standards, FleetBroadband delivers data rates up to 432 kbps utilizing Inmarsat’s I-4 satellite constellation.
Global Positioning System (GPS)
A system of 24 satellites for identifying earth locations. By triangulation of signals from three of the satellites, a receiving unit can pinpoint its current location anywhere on earth to within a few meters.
Inmarsat®
An acronym for International Maritime Satellite. Inmarsat operates a satellite network for global transmission of all types of global satellite services, including maritime, aeronautical and land-based services.
Iridium®
A global mobile satellite telephone and data service. Global coverage is provided by low-earth-orbiting satellites, allowing users to make and receive calls virtually anywhere in the world.
Mobile Satellite Services (MSS)
MSS refers to networks of communications satellites intended for use with mobile and portable wireless devices.
QoS (Quality of Service)
QoS is a broad term used to describe the overall experience a user or application will receive over a network. Network operators achieve end-to-end QoS by ensuring that network elements apply consistent treatment to traffic flows as they traverse the network.
Short Burst Data (SBD)
Iridium SBD service enables value-added applications to send and receive short data transactions efficiently over the Iridium satellite network.
SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) Card
A small printed circuit board that must be inserted in satellite devices when signing on as a subscriber. It contains subscriber details, security information and memory for a personal directory of numbers. The card can be a small plug-in type or sized as a credit-card but has the same functionality. The SIM card also stores data that identifies the caller to the network service provider.
SMS (Short Message Service)
SMS is a communication service that allow the exchange of short text messages between communication devices.
Standard IP
Variable bit rate IP service over a shared connection, providing up to 492kbps of bandwidth. Designed for applications like email, web browsing, FTP, VPN.
Streaming IP
Guaranteed bit rate IP service over a dedicated connection, providing up to 384kbps of bandwidth. Designed for applications like Video and Audio that require guaranteed QoS.
SwiftBroadband
SwiftBroadband is an Inmarsat aeronautical satellite service providing simultaneous high-speed data (up to 432 kbps) and voice connectivity. The service enables an impressive range of cockpit and cabin applications, including telephony, text messaging, email, Internet access.
